De Autodidact. An exhibition by NICC with works by Belgian autodidact artists. With works by Ria Pacquée, Luc Deleu, Dennis Tyfus, Jan Fabre, Jacques Charlier, Guillaume Bijl, Pierre Bismuth, Joaquim Pereira Eires, Charlotte Beaudry, Guy Rombouts, Paul Van Hoeydonck, Philip Van Isacker, Marcel Maeyer, Francis Alÿs, Walter Swennen

On Thursday 7 and Friday 8 November 2013, NICC organized in collaboration with the University of Antwerp, Fashion Museum and the Royal Academy for Fine Arts of Antwerp the two-day symposium TO TEACH OR NOT TO TEACH. Questioning the Art School within the framework of 350 Years Academy. Together with Koen Brams, Dirk Pültau and Johan Pas, artists like Dan Graham, Luc Tuymans, Hinrich Sachs and Herman Pitz discussed the position of the self-thought artist and the learning path of the artist.

As an important addition and reaction to the exhibition ‘350 years Academy’ at the MAS, NICC organized an exhibition and discursive program highlighting the work and careers of numerous Belgian autodidact artists. With works by Ria Pacquée, Luc Deleu, Dennis Tyfus, Jan Fabre, Jacques Charlier, Guillaume Bijl, Pierre Bismuth, Joaquim Pereira Eires, Charlotte Beaudry, Guy Rombouts, Paul Van Hoeydonck, Philip Van Isacker, Marcel Maeyer, Francis Alÿs, Walter Swennen.

This project illustrates and discloses the artistic-conceptual policy and program of the NICC, which, through supporting and disclosing many different aspects of the artists’ practice, makes the role and importance of the individual artist visible.
