Née en 1960 à Tokyo d’une mère allemande et d’un père japonais, Suchan Kinoshita vit et travaille à Bruxelles. Nourrie d’une formation musicale et d’une première carrière dans le théâtre, sa pratique est protéiforme et interdisciplinaire. Son travail intègre régulièrement des éléments d’installations antérieures. Ainsi Proposition d’en face fait référence à un appel à projet de 2017 pour la Place de l’Yser auquel on l’avait invitée à répondre. Installant au même moment un chauffage au sol dans sa maison, Kinoshita propose alors un chauffage public équivalent pour le piétonnier du Quai du Commerce. Suite à une erreur d’encodage, sa proposition n’a pas été retenue.
Pour Kanal-Centre Pompidou, situé juste en face, Kinoshita adapte son projet. L’installation initiale de 50 mètres de long devient un carré de 2 m x 2 m (lit king size). Les tuyaux sont placés en « escargot » dans l’espace public près de l’arrondi du showroom, tandis que la partie technique est hébergée à l’intérieur du bâtiment. Deux tubes techniques relient les deux parties en passant sous le carrelage et la vitrine de l’ancien garage. À l’extérieur, seul le motif des pierres bleues laisse deviner l’intervention de l’artiste et en définit le contour.
Kinoshita a remporté le Prix de Rome (1992) et son travail est régulièrement exposé depuis les années 1980 et a fait l’objet de plusieurs expositions monographiques dont In 10 minutes au Museum Ludwig à Cologne (2010). Elle a notamment participé au Skulptur Projekte Münster (2007) ou aux Biennales d’Istanbul (1995), de Syndey (1998), de Shanghai (2008) ou Moscou (2013).

Born in 1960 in Tokyo to a German mother and a Japanese father, Suchan Kinoshita lives and works in Brussels. Her musical education and an early career in theatre have resulted in a multi-faceted, interdisciplinary artistic practice. She regularly incorporates elements from previous installations. For example, Proposition d’en face references a 2017 request for proposals for the Place de l’Yser for which she had been invited to submit a project. Kinoshita was installing underfloor heating in her house at the same time, so she proposed an equivalent public heating system for the pedestrian precinct on the Quai du Commerce. Due to an encoding error, her proposal was not adopted.
Kinoshita has adapted her project for Kanal-Centre Pompidou, which is just across the street from there. The initial 50-metre long installation is now a 2m x 2m square (the size of a king-size bed). The pipes are coiled flat under the public space near the curve of the showroom, while the technical equipment is housed inside the building. The two are connected by two service tubes running under the tiles and the window of the old garage – showroom. Outside, the pattern of blue stones defining the outline is the only evidence of the artist’s intervention.
Kinoshita was winner of the Prix de Rome in 1992, and her work has been regularly exhibited since the 1980s.
