YES ON THE CITY Urbane Räume in der Gegenwartsfotografie | Urban Spaces in Contemporary Photography

Fotografinnen und Fotografen, die – wie der aktuelle Trend zeigt – vermehrt das Städtische in Augenschein nehmen, fokussieren damit eminent Gesellschaft. Die in « EYES ON THE CITY. Urbane Räume in der Gegenwartsfotografie » versammelten internationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstler verstehen Stadtraum dementsprechend nicht als statischen, homogenen Ort, der in objektiver Weise in Raum und Volumen wiederzugeben ist. Vielmehr reflektieren sie urbane Räume als dynamische Konstellationen, was auch die Nutzung und Wahrnehmung von Gebautem – und ebenso die Räume des Dazwischen beinhaltet.

Schließlich gilt es als ein Charakteristikum urbaner Räume, dass diese einem permanenten Wandel unterliegen und sich entsprechend der in ihnen lebenden Menschen, deren Interaktion untereinander sowie der Interaktion zwischen Menschen und der sie umgebenden Architektur stets aufs Neue konstituieren. Es gibt somit eine Vielzahl an Möglichkeiten, eine Stadt zu sehen und fotografisch zu erfassen.

Photographers who—as the current trend shows—have increasingly a close look at the urban, strongly focus on society by this. The international artists featured in the exhibition « EYES ON THE CITY. Urban Spaces in Contemporary Photography » do not understand the urban space as a static and homogeneous place whose spatiality and volume can be objectively reproduced. They rather reflect on urban spaces as dynamic constellations that include also the uses and the perception of the built environment—and likewise on the spaces inbetween.

After all, it is considered a characteristic feature of urban spaces that they are subject to permanent transformation and continually constitute themselves anew in accordance with the people populating them, their interaction among each other and the interaction between the people and the architecture surrounding them. Thus there is a vast number of possibilities of seeing a city and capturing it in photographs.
