Emilio Lopez Menchero particpe à TRACK, une initiative du SMAK, menée dans la ville de Gand durant tout l’été.

TRACK est une expérience artistique unique dans l’espace public et semi-public de la ville de Gand. Le projet propose des rencontres inattendues et enrichissantes avec la ville, son histoire et ses habitants, et incite le public à réfléchir sur certaines réalités urbaines et la condition humaine contemporaine au sens large. 35 artistes des quatre horizons ont été invités à créer une œuvre nouvelle qui puise largement dans le tissu urbain de Gand, mais relie aussi le contexte local avec des thèmes de portée universelle.
Les deux commissaires, Philippe Van Cauteren et Mirjam Varadinis, ont pris le temps de sélectionner des lieux caractéristiques du centre-ville gantois. Ils ont invité des artistes ayant des affinités avec le contexte thématique de ces lieux. Les artistes sélectionnés ont trouvé dans la réalité locale une riche source d’inspiration. Les résultats de leur plongée dans la ville ne sont donc pas des œuvres d’art au sens traditionnel du terme, mais des projets artistiques faisant appel à divers médias qui explorent les conditions sociales, économiques, culturelles et politiques de la ville et de notre époque. Leurs œuvres exhortent à la participation, entrent de diverses manières en interaction avec les communautés et laissent des traces permanentes.
TRACK est conçu comme un univers de récits, d’évènements, d’histoires parallèles. Il se décompose en six clusters procurant ensemble une coupe historique, culturelle, architecturale et mentale de Gand et du concept de ville contemporaine. Chaque cluster a sa propre ambiance et traite d’un thème spécifique : mobilité, religion, émigration, économie, langage, science, évolutions dans la ville…
TRACK invite le public à découvrir l’exposition sous divers angles. Pas d’itinéraire tracé à l’avance donc, pas de directives à suivre. Chaque visiteur se créera son propre TRACK en choisissant les clusters qui l’intéressent tout particulièrement, se tissant ainsi un récit basé sur ses propres origines et sur la manière dont il approche l’exposition. Un mode de découverte qui est de mise dans un monde globalisé et reflète l’idée que plusieurs réalités peuvent se produire au même moment.

TRACK is a unique art experience in the public and semi public space of the city of Ghent. It offers surprising, enriching and unexpected encounters with the city, its history and its inhabitants and incites to reflect upon urban realities and the contemporary human condition in a broader sense. 35 international artists were invited to conceive new art works that are strongly rooted in the urban fabric of Ghent but link the local context with issues of global significance.
The two curators Philippe Van Cauteren and Mirjam Varadinis took the time to select exemplary locations in the wider city centre of Ghent and invited artists who have an affinity with the thematical context of those places. The selected artists used the local reality as a fertile source of inspiration and the results of their in-depth explorations are not simply traditional works of art, but artistic projects in all different medias that embrace the social, economic, cultural and political conditions of the city and the times we live in. Their works call for participation, interact with the different communities in various ways and leave permanent traces.
TRACK is conceived as a universe of parallel narrations, occurences and (hi)stories. It consists of six clusters that offer a historical, cultural, architectural and mental cross-section of Ghent and the idea of a city today. Each cluster has its own distinct atmosphere and touches upon a specific issue like mobility, religion, migration, economy, language, science and city changes.
TRACK invites the audience to explore the exhibition in various ways. Visitors do not have to follow a given linear trail but are free to choose their own personal TRACK through the clusters and the city.  Each visitor thus creates a different kind of narration, based on his or her background and the way they are approaching the exhibition. This free and multi-layered perception corresponds to our globalised world and the idea of plural realities happening at the same time.
TRACK is welcoming everybody to visit the exhibition and to be inspired by the visionary potential of art.
TRACK was initiated by the S.M.A.K. It continues the tradition established by the large-scale exhibition projects Chambres d’Amis (1986) and Over the Edges (2000), which installed contemporary art in the context of the city and entered into direct dialogue with the public.

López-Menchero joue avec les codes et les attentes et infiltre des éléments connus de la culture populaire dans un contexte culturel artificiel. Il exerce sa pratique artistique dans les zones marginales à forte connotation sociale. López-Menchero réalise pour TRACK une série de portraits cinématographiques dans les quartiers populaires gantois Moscou et Bernadette. Il a demandé à 35 habitants de ces quartiers de chanter une chanson devant l’objectif. Les films sont projetés deux par deux sur des écrans comme dans un concours. Pendant qu’un habitant d’un quartier chante, un habitant de l’autre quartier écoute, et inversement. Cela débouche sur un riche dialogue, non seulement entre les habitants des deux quartiers, mais entre diverses générations, cultures et personnalités.

López-Menchero plays with codes and expectations and insinuates recognisable elements from everyday popular culture into an ‘artificial’ and cultural context. He engages in his artistic practices in indistinct peripheral areas with a high social significance. For TRACK he has made a series of film portraits in the working-class Ghent districts of Moscou and Bernadette. He asked about 35 inhabitants to sing a song in front of the camera. As if in a contest, the films are shown on two screens facing each other. While an inhabitant of one district sings, one from the other district listens, and vice versa. This brings about a captivating dialogue not only between the residents of the two districts, but also between various generations, cultures and personalities.
