Language shapes our structured world, but in fact every sentence we utter is an improvisation. That is the starting point for the new work of Irish visual artist Orla Barry. She has worked with 57 words, an actor, a performer and a musician to devise a work in which chance, fate, and a little witchcraft play equal roles in a performance that is never the same on any night. It is a show of shows, set in a décor of language objects, these objects were used to produce the script for the show.
Orla Barry, now shepherdess as well as artist, returns to performance after “The Scavenger’s Daughters”(2008) with her new knowledge of primal materials and customs to create particular works of art that play with different forms of text production such as speech, monologue, interview, poem or song to create a series of intentionally unplanned crossovers between text, meaning and performance.
Mountain will also be shown as an installation during the exhibition Contemporary Irish Art & Francis Bacon’s Studio in the Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels, as a part of the Irish chairmanship of the European Commission, from February 28 to May 19, 2013. An adapted version of the performance that premieres during Playground Festival at STUK will take part on the opening night of the BOZAR exhibition on February 27, 2013.

Taal geeft vorm aan onze gestructureerde wereld, maar in feite is iedere zin een nieuwe improvisatie. Dat is het uitgangspunt van het nieuwe werk van Orla Barry. Ze ging aan de slag met 57 woorden, een acteur, een performer en een muzikant om een werk uit te denken waarin geluk, het lot en een beetje tovenarij een even grote rol spelen. De voorstelling verschilt daarenboven iedere avond. De taalobjecten op de scène vormen niet alleen het decor, maar liggen ook aan de basis van het script.
Orla Barry is ook schaapsherderin en ze gebruikt haar kennis van de materialen en gebruiken van het Ierse platteland om bijzondere kunstwerken te maken. Door te spelen met de verschillende vormen van tekstproductie zoals poëzie, liedjes, monologen, interviews of speeches ontstaan er onverwachte verbanden tussen tekst, betekenis en performance.
Mountain zal tevens als installatie-werk deel uitmaken van de tentoonstelling Contemporary Irish Art & Francis Bacon’s Studio in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten (BOZAR) van Brussel in het kader van het Ierse Voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie, van 28 feburari tot 19 mei 2013. Een aangepaste versie van de performance die in STUK tijdens het Playground festival in première te zien is, zal plaats vinden op de openingsavond van de tentoonstelling op 27 feburari 2013.
