WIELS consacre, en partenariat avec Culturgest Lisbonne, une exposition rétrospective à l’oeuvre trop peu connue de l’artiste belge Walter Swennen, qui comporte plus de 120 peintures et une sélection de son énorme production de dessins. Elle s’articule autour de l’évolution de sa pratique à partir des années 80, lorsque Swennen décide d’abandonner la poésie « nostalgique » pour résolument s’adonner à la peinture. Si l’on met en regard les jeux de mots monochromes de ses débuts, qui ressemblent à des rébus, et ses récentes énigmes visuelles et questions ludiques à propos de la relation figure et fond, de la manière de peindre ou du support, Swennen se révèle un artiste particulièrement cohérent et sans concession. Peu enclin à suivre des modes et des styles, il adopte une approche non conventionnelle et conceptuelle de l’art pictural, dans laquelle des souvenirs littéraires et inspirés de l’histoire de l’art apparaissent côte à côte avec ses doutes, son autodérision et des thèmes quotidiens ou triviaux. Qu’il s’agisse d’images teintées d’humour de sa période Pop précoce, ou des peintures mélancoliques et tragicomiques plus tardives, il discrédite avec un humour désarmant des illusions ou conventions tenaces, motivé par l’envie de déplacer à nouveau les frontières du jeu visuel et celles de la peinture.

WIELS wijdt, in samenwerking met Culturgest Lissabon, een overzichtstentoonstelling aan het onderbelichte oeuvre van de Belgische kunstenaar Walter Swennen. Dit overzicht omvat ruim 120 schilderijen en een selectie uit zijn enorme productie van tekeningen. Centraal staat zijn schilderkunstige ontwikkeling vanaf 1980, toen Swennen besloot om de ‘nostalgische’ poëzie achter zich te laten en resoluut schilder te worden. Als we zijn vroege monochrome rebusachtige woordspelletjes naast zijn recente visuele raadsels en speelse vraagstukken over figuur-achtergrond, schilderwijze of drager plaatsen, blijkt wat voor een consequente en compromisloze kunstenaar Swennen is. Wars van modes en stijlen hanteert hij een onconventionele en conceptuele benadering van de schilderkunst, waar herinneringen aan de literatuur en de kunstgeschiedenis zij aan zij verschijnen met zelfrelativerende twijfels en dagdagelijkse of triviale thema’s. Of het nu gaat om de beeldhumor uit zijn vroege Pop-periode of de melancho- lische en tragikomische schilderijen van nadien: met een ontwapenende humor doorprikt hij hardnekkige illusies en conventies, vanuit de drang om telkens opnieuw het visuele spelplezier, zijn grenzen en die van de schilderkunst te verleggen.

WIELS presents, in collaboration with Culturgest Lisbon, a retrospective exhibition of the work, still relatively unknown to the wider public, of Belgian artist Walter Swennen (b. 1946). The exhibition, which includes over 120 works, as well as a selection of his drawings, revolves around the evolution of his painting since the 1980s, when he abandoned ‘nostalgic’ poetry to devote himself squarely to painting. When we see his early monochrome wordplays, which resemble riddles, paired with the recent visual enigmas and playful questions about figure & ground, the support and how to paint, Swennen appears as a singularly coherent and uncompromising artist. Never very inclined to follow fads or styles, he adopts an unconventional and conceptual approach to pictorial art, one in which literary recollections and art-historical citations appear suffused with his doubts and self-deprecation, as well as with everyday and trivial themes. Whether in the playfully amusing images of his early Pop days or in the melancholic or tragicomical ones of his late period, Swennen, with disarming sense of humour, debunks illusions and deepseated conventions in his efforts to constantly displace the borders of painting and visual play.
